Wilkie Collins. The Moonstone. A Novel. New York: Harper & Brothers, 1868. First U. S. edition, issue in wrappers. Octavo. 223, [1, blank] pages. Frontispiece (included in pagination) with in-text illustrations throughout. Publisher's perfect binding, light brown printed wrappers; text block edges trimmed. Spine rolled; backstrip wrinkled with chipping at ends and three horizontal closed splits; wear along joints with chipping and short tears at rear with evidence of glue added; rubbing, edge wear, and rippling to wrappers, front wrapper with inked signature at head and several faint tidemarks, mostly toward edges. Text block edges bumped, roughened, and slightly dulled, with a couple of small spots of foxing; chipping to some individual page edges; a few leaves roughly opened toward rear of text block; occasional faint speck of foxing or staining scattered throughout interior. Very good. Regarded as "the first, the longest, and the best of modern English detective novels" (T. S. Eliot, quoted in David, The Cambridge Companion to the Victorian Novel, p. 179). A Haycraft Queen Cornerstone.
