Wilkie Collins. Group of Three Binding Variants of The Moonstone. New York: 1868. First U. S. editions.
Wilkie Collins. The Moonstone. A Novel. New York: Harper & Brothers, 1868. First U. S. editions, issue in cloth. Three volumes. Octavo. [2], 223, [3, blanks] pages. Frontispieces (included in pagination) and in-text illustrations throughout. Publisher's dark brown, light brown, and dark green cloths, spines stamped in gilt, boards with blind-ruled borders; all text block edges trimmed. Spine ends pushed and a bit worn, dark brown starting to fry a bit and chip at head of green; light wear along joints; mild rubbing and spots of faint soiling to boards; board edges worn; corners bumped with boards starting to show. Text blocks very slightly dulled with age, particularly along edges, which have some small spots of staining; top edges faintly darkened; rear hinge of dark green variant split and repaired, endpapers foxed and discolored, previous owner signature to front pastedown, tear at fore-edge of rear free endpaper; occasional foxing and soiling scattered throughout interiors; green variant with discoloration between final leaf of text and rear free endpaper, offsetting from item previously laid in. Very good. Regarded as "the first, the longest, and the best of modern English detective novels" (T. S. Eliot, quoted in David, The Cambridge Companion to the Victorian Novel, p. 179). A Haycraft Queen Cornerstone.
