Publisher's patterned purple-and-white paper-covered boards; black ornaments on front and rear; spine lettered in black. Original illustrated dust jacket. Edges untrimmed; top edge trimmed and possibly stained blue. Mild shelf wear and toning at extremities of binding. Dust jacket slightly rubbed, with wear at spine ends and ends of flap folds. Normal tonig to edges of text block. Near fine. The basis for the 1950 film noir directed by John Huston, which has since been preserved by the National Film Registry and the Library of Congress for its significance.

Publisher's full green cloth; front stamped in yellow and black; spine lettered in black. Top edge trimmed; others untrimmed. Original illustrated dust jacket. Slight shelf wear, fading to binding. Very mild wear to edges of dust jacket; rubbing with minor loss of color; spine panel a touch darkened. Normal mild toning to verso of dust jacket, edges of text block. A little dusty, though still near fine. Burnett's first novel and the basis for the 1931 film of the same name. A Haycraft Queen Cornerstone. From the Otto Penzler Collection of Mystery Fiction.
