    W. R. Burnett. Little Caesar. New York: Lincoln MacVeagh, The Dial Press, 1929. First edition. Octavo (7.4375 x 5.125 inches; 189 x 130 mm.). [2, blank], [vi], 308, [4, blank] pages. Publisher's dark blue cloth lettered in yellow on front board and decoratively stamped and lettered in yellow on spine; publisher's device embossed and in blind on front board (the impression visible on front pastedown); top edge trimmed, others untrimmed; in the original dust jacket. Spine ends and corners very lightly worn; soft bump to the base of the front joint; few cosmetic scuffs and a few tiny surface blemishes to the rear board. Dust jacket splitting at upper edge of front flap fold (about three and one-quarter inches) and front spine fold (about two inches), but still intact; short closed tear (about one inch) to bottom edge of front panel and another (shorter) closed tear to the bottom of the rear panel; a few minor chips at spine ends and fold edges; some trace faint soiling; very lightly darkened at folds and edges; verso lightly stained with residue of adhesive since (mostly) removed. A nearly fine copy in a very good dust jacket. A Haycraft-Queen Cornerstone. Basis for the 1931 pre-code high spot with Edward G. Robinson starring as Rico. From the KoKo Collection.

More Information: "W. R. Burnett [1899-1982] is one of the godfathers of crime fiction. He virtually introduced the realistic professional criminal as protagonist to modern popular literature and was instrumental in establishing the parameters, and the clichés, of the gangster story in fiction and in film. Burnett's first novel, Little Caesar (1929), set the stage for every urban mob tale to come." (Lee Server, Encyclopedia of Pulp Fiction Writers (New York: 2002), pages 43-44).
