Publisher's dark blue cloth lettered in yellow on front board and decoratively stamped and lettered in yellow on spine; publisher's device embossed and in blind on front board (the impression visible on front pastedown); top edge of the text block trimmed, others untrimmed; in the original dust jacket, priced $2.00. Minor shelf wear at extremities of binding. Mild darkening to top edge of text block. Some slight paper loss at spine and flap fold ends of jacket; one short split at top of front flap fold; light toning. Near fine overall. The author's debut novel. Basis for the 1931 film of the same name starring Edward G. Robinson as Rico. Both the novel and the film "set the stage for every urban mob tale to come" (Lee Server, Encyclopedia of Pulp Fiction Writers (New York: 2002), p. 43). A Haycraft Queen Cornerstone.
