[2, half-title], 309, [5, blank] pages. Frontispiece by George W. Gage. Publisher's black cloth, spine and front lettered in greenish-yellow; all text block edges trimmed; original illustrated dust jacket. Some loss to spine ends, with remaining cloth fraying; small patches of cloth missing along bottom edges of boards. Front hinge just starting to crack. Text block softly dulled with age; mild soiling along top edge. Jacket chipped at foot of spine panel and along top edge; a couple of tiny tears with associated creasing; mild soiling and rubbing; small splits starting at each flap fold, no more than an inch long; both flaps clipped; hairline split starting at foot of front panel fold reinforced with clear tape at verso. Good. Generally acknowledged to be the first mystery novel written by an African-American man.
