Victor Hugo. Les Misérables. London: Hurst and Blackett, 1862. First authorized English edition. Three volumes. Octavo. [2, half-title], viii, 395, [1, printer's statement]; viii, 408; viii, 404, [8, publisher's ads] pages. Publisher's blue bead-grain cloth, spine lettered in gilt, boards with blind-stamped decorative borders; top edges of text blocks untrimmed; pale green coated endpapers. Spines a bit skewed; backstrips slightly faded and rubbed, resulting some loss to gilt stamping; spine ends pushed and worn; wear along joints; boards rubbed and somewhat soiled; wear and some minor discoloration to board edges; corners bumped, with boards just peeking through cloth. Front hinge of first volume split and binding held to text block by sewing alone, resulting in front board and front portion of spine being partially pulled away; rear hinges of first and second volume cracked, but still sound; bookplates at front pastedowns of each volume, one in third volume having pulled up some of the pale green coating from facing free endpaper; endpaper generally a bit soiled and lightly rubbed. Text blocks a bit jostled, resulting in a few sprung gatherings with worn edges; edges softly dulled, top edges dust-soiled and remaining edges faintly foxed and soiled; spines split between several gatherings throughout, but all still soundly sewn; occasional faint, marginal spot of staining or soiling scattered throughout interior. Still, about very good. Very scarce in publisher's cloth. A Haycraft Queen Cornerstone.
