Publisher's blue cloth, stamped in dark reddish-brown on front and spine; top edge of the text block trimmed, others untrimmed; in the original illustrated dust jacket with $2.50 price on the front flap. Very mild shelf wear at extremities of binding; spine ends just barely pushed. Top edge of text block slightly dust-soiled. Dust jacket spine panel sunned; minor wear to the edges, with a tiny amount of fraying at the top end of spine panel; a few spots of color loss at joint and front flap folds; mild rubbing principally visible at rear panel. Overall a beautiful, near fine copy in a very good jacket. Basis for the 1944 film noir directed by Otto Preminger and starring Gene Tierney in the title role, since selected by the Library of Congress for preservation in the National Film Registry.
