Vera Caspary. Laura. Boston: [1943]. Book club edition, association copy, inscribed to producer Hunt Stomberg, Jr.

    More Information:

Vera Caspary. Laura. Boston: Houghton Mifflin Company, [1943]. Book club edition, association copy, inscribed by the author to producer Hunt Stomberg (presumably Hunt Stomberg, Jr.) on the front free endpaper: "For Hunt Stromberg / With very very good / wishes (for me, too) / Cordially / Vera / April 29, 1946". Octavo. [vi], [1]-237, [1, blank] pages. Publisher's blue cloth front board and spine lettered in brown; dust jacket. Spine and upper edge of boards sunned, some light edgewear and soiling to binding. A few gutters slightly overopened, text toned with occasional thumbsoiling. Jacket spine sunned, some edgewear, chipping and a few short tears to jacket, some thumbsoiling to rear jacket panel. Still, very good.

Hunt Stromberg, Jr., (1923-1986) was a Broadway, radio, and television producer; he was the son of legendary producer Hunt Stromberg (1894-1968). In 1947, he produced a Broadway adaptation of Laura, three years after the classic noir film of the same name was released in theaters. The Broadway production ran for forty four performances. It is thus more likely that this book was inscribed to Hunt Stromberg, Jr. rather than his father.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
