Description

Umberto Eco. Il nome della rosa. [The Name of the Rose]. [Milan]: Bompiani, [1980]. First edition, signed by the author on the title-page. Octavo (8 x 4.75 inches; 204 x 120 mm.). [3]-503, [1, blank], [7, index], [1, printer's note], [2, blank] pages (note: front endpaper included in pagination). Publisher's red cloth, spine lettered in gilt; all edges trimmed; map endpapers; in original dust jacket. Boards gently splayed; spine only just barely leaning; spine ends very softly pushed; trace trivial wear. Front endpapers faintly foxed; page margins very slightly toned; occasional very mild over-opening. Dust jacket upper edge lightly worn with a couple tiny nicks; front panel with a soft crease to the upper margin and a single, short (one-quarter inch) closed tear to the upper edge with a tape repair to the verso and a very narrow strip of tape folded over onto the recto; price-clipped. Near fine. One of the most popular historical crime novels of the twentieth century and perhaps the most literarily significant biblio-mystery.
