Twelvemo. viii, [2], 11-226, [2, ads] pages. Initials, in-text illustration. Blue Z cloth variant; front and rear stamped in blind; spine lettered in gilt. All edges trimmed. Brown-coated endpapers. Spine ends pushed with some shelf and joint wear; corners softly bumped with what appears to be purplish color correction applied over some of exposed cloth, Very mild rubbing to boards. Edges of text block slightly toned. Occasional faint, small areas of spot-soiling scattered throughout interior. A near fine text block in a very good binding. Featuring the first detective story (Chapters XI-XIV) to appear in book form in America since Poe's Tales in 1845. Queen's Quorum 6. BAL 257. From the Otto Penzler Collection of Mystery Fiction.
