Twelvemo. viii, [2], 11-226, [2, ads] pages. Initials, in-text illustration. Plum Z cloth variant; front and rear stamped in blind; spine lettered in gilt. All edges trimmed. Brown-coated endpapers. Spine ends slightly pushed; just a touch of shelf wear. Minor fading to spine. Occasional faint spot- and thumbsoiling scattered throughout interior, evidence of dog-earing. About near fine. With an ALS signed by Aldrich on The Atlantic Monthly letterhead dated "Dec 19th, 1854" answering a reader query. Featuring the first American detective story (Chapters XI-XIV) to appear in book form since Poe's 1845 Tales. Queen's Quorum 6. BAL 257. From the Otto Penzler Collection of Mystery Fiction.
