Publisher's black cloth, spine lettered in gilt; all text block edges trimmed; original illustrated dust jacket. Foot of spine very slightly crimped and worn; boards with a trace of pale soiling visible mostly in raking light; minimal wear along bottom edges; corners just a tiny bit tapped. Text block very softly dulled with age; edges faintly foxed; top edge dust-soiled; previous owner signature at upper corner of front free endpaper. Jacket a bit rubbed and soiled; fairly mild wear along edges, with nicking at spine and flap fold ends; a handful of tears extending in from edges with associated rumpling and creasing, three longest (ranging from one-half to two inches) at head of spine panel and foot of rear flap fold; soft creasing along flap folds. Near fine.

[Together with:] Ball of Fortune. London: Collins, [1938]. First edition. Inscribed, "To / W. Newlin / from / his old friend, / the Author / 17/11/38 Sydney Horler." Octavo. 252, [4, ads] pages. Publisher's dark red cloth, spine lettered in silver; all text block edges trimmed; original illustrated dust jacket. Mild lean to spine; spine ends a bit softened; binding discolored along top edges, fainter along bottom; trace of shelf wear. Text block a bit dulled with age; foxing at edges; some uneven discoloration to free endpapers from exposure to jacket flaps and pastedowns. Dulling to exposed panels of jacket; general mild rubbing and soiling; chipping at ends of spine panel and flap folds, with a bit of nicking and milder wear along edges of front and rear panels; light wear and soft creasing along folds; top edges of flaps tanned and rumpled; some faint foxing at verso. Very good.
