First edition, association copy, inscribed by the author for Horace McCoy on the front free endpaper: "To 'The McCoy' -- / who was just saved / in the nick of time / from being a poet - / but who some- / how keeps a / poet's feeling for / the bitter bright- / ness of life -- / Stuart Palmer," with a doodle of penguin. Octavo (7.8125 x 5.5 inches; 198 x 140). [x], 293, [1, blank] pages. Publisher's black cloth, spine lettered in red, spine and front board stamped in red; top edge of the text block stained red, others untrimmed; plain endpapers; in the original dust jacket. Rear board just barely splayed; spine ends and corners lightly worn; bottom corners softly bumped; bottom edges of the boards rubbed with a small ding to the front. Top stain very faintly faded; text block sagging just a hair; endpapers lightly browned and faintly discolored in the hinges from binding glue; faint marginal tanning. Dust jacket with a vertical crease through the spine panel; light wear to the folds; a touch of trivial edgewear; a couple very soft wrinkles to the crown. Nearly fine.
