Stuart Palmer. The Puzzle of the Silver Persian. Garden City: Doubleday, Doran & Company, for The Crime Club, 1934. First edition. Octavo (7.4375 x 5.125 inches; 189 x 130). [xii], 306, [2, blank] pages. Publisher's black cloth, spine lettered and stamped in red; top edge of the text block stained red, others untrimmed; plain endpapers; in the original dust jacket, priced $2.00. Spine very slightly askew; spine ends and corners very lightly worn; covers just barely rubbed. Top stain faintly darkened. Dust jacket edges lightly worn, particularly to the spine ends; touch of creasing to the upper margin; spine panel faintly dulled; general very light rubbing. Near fine. The fifth Hildegarde Withers novel.

[Together with:] The Puzzle of the Red Stallion. Garden City: Doubleday, Doran & Company, for The Crime Club, 1936. First edition, inscribed with a quotation on the front free endpaper: "For Shirley - / 'I only wish we knew what it / meant! Piper continued, studying the / odd device. (p. 35) / Stuart Palmer," dated September 26, 1964 and with a penguin doodle. Octavo (7.4375 x 5.125 inches; 188 x 130). Ix, [1, blank], [2, fly-title leaf (verso blank)], 307, [1, blank] pages. Publisher's red cloth, spine lettered and stamped in black, publisher's device stamped in black on the front board; top edge stained red, others untrimmed; plain endpapers; in a likely supplied (but still appropriate) dust jacket, priced $2.00. Spine somewhat leaning; backstrip lightly dulled, with light discoloration along the front joint (possible adhesive remnants with tiny flecks of tissue); board with speckled wear around the edges; spine ends and corners worn with the boards partially exposed. Top stain faintly faded; endpapers lightly discolored from binder's glue in the hinges; dust jacket flaps affixed to both pastedowns; generic book plate (no provenance) affixed to the front free endpaper, obscuring a large-bruise that occurred prior to the author signing (ex-library with card pocket removed?). Dust jacket spine panel creased; tape affixed to the recto at the spine ends and over a tear on the bottom of the rear panel; edges lightly worn; some soiling to the rear panel and front flap. Good. The sixth Hildegarde Withers novel. From the Otto Penzler Collection of Mystery Fiction.
