Sax Rohmer. The Emperor of America. Garden City: The Crime Club, Inc., 1929. First edition. Octavo. vi, , 310,  pages. Publisher's black cloth, front and spine lettered in red; all edges trimmed; original first-state dust jacket, with an additional, later jacket. Spine skewed; soft crease to spine; spine ends pushed, with small split at head; boards soiled; corners bumped; mild wear to bottom edges. Mild tanning to text block; a few faint spots of marginal thumbsoiling scattered throughout. Paper loss to first-state dust jacket, including top half of front flap and part of front panel, with fairly small chips at ends of spine panel; with several tears at edges and folds of jacket, ranging from less than one inch to approximately three inches long (tears at front flap fold and head of front panel reinforced with tape at verso); general rubbing, soiling and soft creasing to jacket. Some tiny nicks and short tears at ends of later jacket spine panel; general light rubbing; very short tears at tops of flap folds, with one at front resulting in small hole at upper corner of panel. About very good.

Publisher's black cloth, front ad spine lettered in red; all edges trimmed, top edge stained red; original illustrated dust jacket, with wraparound band on red paper. Spine ends crimped; a few small spots of faint soiling at boards, visible only in raking light; slight wear to bottom edges. Text block very softly browned; topstain faded just a bit; two tiny bookseller stickers at rear pastedown. Mild rubbing to front and rear panels of jacket, with some small holes and spots of surface loss at rear, likely insect damage. A bit of rubbing and wear to folds and front and rear panels of wraparound band, with several spots of insect damage at rear panel. Near fine book and jacket, band very good.
