Robert Louis Stevenson. Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde. New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1886. First edition. Octavo (7.375 x 5 inches; 189 x 128 mm.). [8], 138, [14, publisher's ads] pages. Publisher's perfect binding, pale yellow wrappers, lettered in black; text block edges trimmed. Spine skewed a touch at head; backstrip creased and slightly sunned, a couple of small chips at foot with paper starting to come up just a bit; a few specks of soiling and faint smudges to wrappers; mild edge wear resulting in some soft creases and tiny nicks at corners, and a single minuscule tear at bottom edge of rear wrapper. Text block edges lightly dulled with a few of specks of foxing; mild rubbing to bottom edge; soft bump to upper front corner of text block. A near fine copy of this scarce and fragile novella with bright, clean wrappers and interior. No previous records of the first edition in wrappers in Rare Book Hub. Released in the U. S. four days before its first appearance in England. Housed in custom orange slipcase. "[Stevenson] achieved world-wide success with his 'shilling shocker' Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde (1886), a moral allegory about the divided self and the problem of evil, the main incidents of which came to him in a dream. The characters of Jekyll and Hyde have become proverbial and the story has been widely translated, reprinted in countless editions, and dramatized (if often distorted) in plays and films" (DNB). A Haycraft Queen Cornerstone.
