Inscribed, "For / the Hambletons, / with congratulations / and every good wish, / Robert E Sherwood / April / 1936." Octavo. [8], 176 pages. Publisher's original dark red cloth, front and spine lettered in gilt. Original pictorial dust jacket. All edges trimmed. Minimal shelf wear at extremities of binding; a bit of soiling visible mostly in raking light; head of spine slightly frayed. Normal age toning at edges and interior of text block. Some mild spotting at endpapers; a few leaves creased gently from gutter. Light rubbing to exposed panels of jacket; spine panel a bit sunned; light wear with minimal paper loss at edges; a bit of spotting to flaps. Toning to verso with one or two spots of damp-staining. Near fine. Produced on Broadway in 1935, starring Leslie Howard and Humphrey Bogart in his first theatrical leading role. Basis for the 1936 film starring Howard, Bogart and Bette Davis. From the Otto Penzler Collection of Mystery Fiction.
