Description

Rex Stout. Fer-De-Lance. A Nero Wolfe Mystery. New York: Farrar & Rinehart, [1934]. First edition. Octavo (7.875 x 5.5 inches; 200 x 140 mm.). [2, half-title ("Books by Rex Stout" on verso)], [2, title (copyright on verso)], 313, [3, blank] pages. Original black cloth lettered in gilt on front cover and spine. Top edge stained red (faded). Binding a little rubbed, with a few small areas of discoloration; slightly skewed; corners lightly rubbed; head of spine softened and beginning to fray; gilt lettering, on spine especially, a little rubbed; vertical crease down spine. Endpapers browned slightly and foxed; additional foxing to edges and intermittently to text. Half-inch curved tear to lower margin of pages 53/54; a few leaves with tiny edge nicks or tears. A few marginal stains or smudges. A very good copy. In the original scarce color pictorial dust jacket by Winifred Earl Lefferts. Unclipped, with the "Net, $2.00" price on front flap; with the "Recommended by the Book of the Month Club" sticker on the front panel. Jacket with considerable professional restoration, repairing folds, edges tears, and pieces missing across top of rear panel, spine, and front panel; backed and with some expert recoloring; short tears remain at bottom of rear panel and front flap, and there are a few tiny chips at top edge of flaps and rear panel. A few tiny areas of surface loss on front panel. The jacket still presents quite well. Housed in a quarter brown leather custom clamshell case. Townsend A10b. A Haycraft-Queen Cornerstone. Fer-de-Lance introduces Nero Wolfe, "a brilliant, oversize, eccentric armchair detective." The story's title is the common name of Bothrops atrox, a venomous South American snake. The novel appeared in abridged form in The American Magazine (November 1934) under the title "Point of Death," and was adapted for the 1936 movie Meet Nero Wolfe. From the KoKo Collection.
