Publisher's dark grayish-red, v-grain, paper-covered boards, spine lettered in silver; all edges trimmed; in original dust jacket. Spine leaning gently; corners softly bumped. Faint discoloration to endpapers. Dust jacket rubbed at folds; faint soiling to white background of rear panel; occasional light edgewear with a couple small chips at fold edges. Near fine.     Chandler recalled the experience of writing The Long Good-Bye in a letter to Jean de Leon in 1957: "I was a loving and faithful husband for almost thirty-one years, and I watched my wife die by half-inches and I wrote my best book in the agony of that knowledge, and yet I wrote it.
