Publisher's brownish orange smooth V-cloth, spine and front board stamped and lettered in dark grayish blue, publisher's device stamped in dark grayish blue on rear board; top edge stained dark blue, others trimmed; in restored original dust jacket. Spine very slightly leaning; backstrip faintly dulled; joints, spine ends and corners rubbed; two tiny nicks to the crown; top corner of rear board very softly bumped. Topstain lightly rubbed, with some faint color loss, near spine, with a small splash to the first couple gatherings and a tiny bump (no substantial color loss) to the top of pages 65 to 100. Endpapers lightly browned from binding glue; bookseller ticker to rear pastedown. Dust jacket spine panel faintly faded; two-inch closed tear to upper edge of front flap fold with small chip at lower edge; restored along edges and folds reinforced; spine ends with most extensive work, the first and last letters of the author's first and last name, as well as the 'PF' in 'KNOPF' discreetly touched up with manuscript ink; paper restoration peeling from some folds. Still, a near fine copy in an attractive restored jacket. The author's first novel and the introduction of Philip Marlowe. Basis for the 1946 Howard Hawks noir staple starring Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall with a screenplay co-written by William Faulkner. Bruccoli A1.1.a. A Haycraft-Queen Cornerstone.
