    Description

Raymond Chandler. Farewell, My Lovely. New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 1940. First edition, association copy, inscribed for literature professor Donald A. Yates on the front free endpaper: "For / Donald Yates / with best wishes / Raymond Chandler / La Jolla 9/11/47." Octavo (7.375 x 5 inches; 187 x 127 mm.). [1, blank], [1, ad for The Big Sleep], [2, half-title leaf (verso blank)], [2, title-leaf (copyright on verso)], [1, disclaimer], [1, blank], [1-2, fly-title (verso blank), 1 [sic, actually 3], 4-275, [1, blank], [1, note on the type], [3, blank] pages. Publisher's pinkish orange smooth V-cloth, spine and front board lettered and stamped in blue, publisher's device stamped in blue on the rear board; top edge of the text block stained blue, others trimmed; plain endpapers; in the original dust jacket. Spine with just a hint of a lean; spine ends very softly pushed, with a touch of wear; corners very lightly worn; top corners somewhat bumped, bottom just slightly bent. Top stain still vivid but with some minimal dust-soiling; upper corner of the text block bumped in the outer gatherings; endpapers faintly discolored in the hinge from the binder's glue, slightly more so in the rear, with the rear pastedown slightly tanned; a fresh and clean text with only a couple instances of marginal spot-soiling, including a tiny faint pinkish dot to the bottom margin of pages [1]-4. Dust jacket somewhat tanned, particularly at the spine and rear panels, also along the flap folds and top edge, front panel still quite bright; tanning visible on the verso; edges and folds very lightly worn, a few nicks to the spine ends with light creasing at the crown, a couple of stray closed tears along the upper edge with some trivial wrinkling; a very short (about one-quarter of one inch) lateral tear to each of the flap fold interiors; a couple negligible scuff marks; price-clipped. A beautiful copy. All-in-all, near fine with only minor flaws. Chandler's follow up to The Big Sleep, uncommon signed. The second work featuring Philip Marlowe, but the first to make it to the big screen, with unconventional hero Dick Powell in his first leading role in an action film, directed by Edward Dmytryk for RKO Radio Pictures and released in 1944 as Murder, My Sweet. Bruccoli A2.1.a. The Dark Page 60. A Haycraft-Queen Cornerstone. From the Otto Penzler Collection of Mystery Fiction.

More Information: Donald A. Yates was a Michigan State professor who published translations of Jorge-Luis Borges and other Latin American authors; he apparently also had an interest in mystery literature and was one of the few people to develop a friendship with Cornell Woolrich, see his copy of The Bride Wore Black in lot 45--- as well as his The Big Sleep in 45---..
