Raoul Whitfield. Green Ice. London: Alfred A. Knopf, 1930. First English edition. Octavo (7.25 x 4.875 inches; 185 x 123 mm.). [2, blank], [viii], 282, [2, blank] pages. Publisher's light blue cloth, spine lettered in yellow, spine and front board with emerald devices stamped in green and yellow, publisher's device stamped in yellow on the rear board; top edge stained green; in original dust jacket. Cloth lightly faded with dust jacket design burned into front board; light circular stain to front board; some rubbing to emerald device in upper right corner; shallow ridge to spine; occasional minor soiling; board edges just a trifle rubbed. Topstain dulled; free endpapers lightly discolored; small circular stain to terminal blank; hinges possibly strengthened (nearly invisible repairs or possible with glue from recasing U. S. sheets). Dust jacket edges worn with chips to folds; spine ends and flap folds reinforced by tape at edges on verso; rear spine fold splitting and nearly detached; white background of rear panel somewhat soiled; front panel with large bruise in circular outline, soft diagonal crease, and light staining to upper margin. A very good copy in a good jacket. Any Green Ice jacket seems to be one of the great rarities among Black Mask collectibles with no comps found for first U. S. or first English edition copies. Raoul Whitfield's first novel, about which Dashiell Hammett said, "The plot does not matter so much. What matters is that here are two hundred and eighty pages of naked action pounded into tough compactness by staccato, hammerlike writing," in a New York Evening Post review (Introduction to the 2014 Mysterious Press edition). From the KoKo Collection.
