Patricia Highsmith. Strangers on a Train. New York: Harper & Brothers, [1950]. First edition. Octavo (8 x 5.5 inches; 203 x 140 mm.). [viii], 299, [5, blank] pages. Publisher's light blue cloth, spine lettered in blue, publisher's device stamped in blue on front board; in original dust jacket. Backstrip and board edges very faintly faded; spine ends and corners lightly worn; top corner of rear board very softly bumped. Dust jacket spine panel faded, as usual; some paper loss to lower margin of rear panel; front fold edges splitting with 2.25 inches closed tear at top and three-quarters inch tear at bottom edge; front joint fold with short (three-quarters inch) irregular closed at bottom edge and tiny interior hole; edges only lightly worn otherwise with and a few other short closed tears or small chips (particularly at spine ends); light occasional soiling, mostly near rear flap fold. Still, a near fine copy in a very good jacket. Highsmith's debut novel. Source material for the 1951 Alfred Hitchcock thriller starring Farley Granger, Robert Walker and Ruth Roman. From the KoKo Collection.
