Melville Davisson Post. Uncle Abner. Master of Mysteries. New York: D. Appleton and Company, 1918. First edition, with "(1)" following the conclusion of the text. Octavo (7.25 x 4.875 inches; 185 x 125 mm.). vii, [1, blank], 342, [1], [1, blank] pages. Publisher's blue cloth, spine and front board lettered and ruled in gilt, front board ruled in blind; all edges of the text block trimmed; plain endpapers; in the original dust jacket (restored), priced $1.50 on the spine panel. Backstrip very faintly dulled; spine ends very gently pushed with a touch of wear; corners very lightly worn. Dust jacket restored, replacing lost paper at small chips to the spine ends and fold edges, as well as a couple spots on the edges; closed tears mended and creases smoothed; folds patched and strengthened with a little yellow coloring added along the front flap fold and horizontal edges (but hardly any text seemingly replaced, only a couple letters touched up). Jacket front rubbed, particularly the front panel, and lightly soiled. A nearly fine copy in a respectfully restored jacket; housed in a custom clamshell case from the Dragonfly Bindery. A notoriously difficult mystery highspot to find in any dust jacket; according to Rare Book Hub, the only previous copy sold was in 2005. From the Otto Penzler Collection of Mystery Fiction.

Queen's Quorum 60 ("second only to Poe's Tales among all the books of detective short stories written by American authors"); A Haycraft-Queen Cornerstone ("No reader can call himself connoisseur who does not know Uncle Abner forward and backward. His four-square pioneer ruggedness looms as a veritable monument in the literature. Posterity may well name him, after Dupin, the greatest American contribution to the form").
