Melville Davisson Post. The Nameless Thing. New York: 1912. First edition, presentation copy, inscribed.

More Information: Melville Davisson Post. The Nameless Thing. New York: D. Appleton and Company, 1912. First edition, with "(1)" following the conclusion of the text; presentation copy, inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper: "For my dear [--] / Florence Allen[--] / with the love of / the author / Melville Davisson Post." Octavo (7.25 x 4.875 inches; 185 x 124 mm.). [x], 337, [1], [2, blank], [2, ads] pages; frontispiece and three additional illustrations inserted throughout. Publisher's brownish-orange ribbed cloth, spine and front board lettered in white, front board decoratively stamped in brown and ruled in blind; all edges of the text block trimmed; plain endpapers; in the original dust jacket, priced $1.25 on the spine panel. Backstrip with two tiny faint, round gray blemishes; white lettering at the foot of the spine somewhat worn; spine ends very softly pushed; spine ends and corners a trifle worn; front board just barely bowed; two trivial surface scratches to the rear board. Dust jacket chipped at the crown, but not enough to affect any text; tears to the tops of the fold edges, with a lateral crease across the top of the rear panel; other light edge wear with a few nicks and short closed tears; light creasing, including two very soft round creases across parts of the front and spine panels; a couple small splashed to the spine panel; rear panel lightly rubbed. A nearly fine copy in a very good dust jacket. Ex-Richard M. Lackritz, sold in his first sale, April 2002 (Christie's); to the best of our knowledge, it hasn't been sold in jacket since, according to Rare Book Hub. From the Otto Penzler Collection of Mystery Fiction.
