Melville Davisson Post. The Mystery at the Blue Villa. New York: 1919. First edition.

More Information: Melville Davisson Post. The Mystery at the Blue Villa. New York: D. Appleton and Company, 1919. First edition, with "(1)" following the conclusion of the text; publisher's file copy, rubber stamped as such and numbered (6803) on the front free endpaper by the publisher. Octavo (7.25 x 4.875 inches; 185 x 125). [vi], 383, [1], [2, blank] pages. Publisher's greenish-blue cloth, spine and front board lettered and ruled in gilt, front board ruled in blind; all edges of the text block trimmed; plain endpapers; in the original dust jacket, priced $1.75, with the reproduction of a letter by Theodore Roosevelt, written to the author in anticipation of this title, on the rear panel. Spine just barely askew; backstrip very lightly dulled with a small circular discoloration toward the bottom (presumably from a sticker); spine end and corners worn; both boards partially bent with a corresponding wrinkle extending up from the bottom edges; bottom corners bumped; front board slightly bowed. Top edge of the text very lightly soiled with a series of small splashes near the bound edge; endpapers very lightly worn; short split to the front hinge near the upper edge. Dust jacket edges and fold a little worn with some bruising wearing the paper a little thin and some shallow chipping to the crown and a handful of short close tears; light creasing; spine panel very faintly darkened with a touch of soiling and a very faint small tidemark near the center. Very good. From the Otto Penzler Collection of Mystery Fiction.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
