Inscribed, "Dear Bella -- / Early in our acquaintance / I reckoned my obligation to you / in the terms of light-years, / but lately I've lost count / and given up. / Sincerely / Max." Octavo. [6], 125, [1, blank] pages. Publisher's gray cloth, stamped in maroon on front and spine. Original illustrated dust jacket. Edges rough-trimmed; top edge stained blue. Pictorial endpapers. Very slight loss of stamping at spine; small gouge at bottom of front board; a few spots of white soiling at rear. Slight chipping at spine and flap fold ends of dust jacket; toning, particularly at spine panel; slight edge wear; some soft creasing near flap and joint folds. Some leaves roughly opened; a few gatherings unopened. About near fine in a very good dust jacket. After debuting at the English Theatre in Indianapolis in October 1939, the production moved to Broadway's Ethel Barrymore Theatre for the 1939-1940 season. Basis for the 1948 film noir of the same name, directed by John Huston and starring Humphrey Bogard and Lauren Bacall. From the Otto Penzler Collection of Mystery Fiction.
