    John Le Carré. Call for the Dead. London: Victor Gollancz, 1961. First edition, signed by the author on title-page. Octavo (7.125 x 4.75 inches; 182 x 122 mm.). 192 pages. Publisher's reddish-brown cloth, spine lettered in gilt; all edges trimmed; in the original yellow dust jacket printed in black and red. Mild wear to edges, joints, corners of binding. A few small stains to fore-edge and bottom edge of text block. Persistent small spots of staining at lower margins of first hundred or so pages. Slight curling to bottom edge of dust jacket; some wear at spine ends; faint discoloration to flap folds, spine and front panels and verso of flaps. Very good. Housed in custom full yellow morocco felt-lined clamshell. Le Carré's first published work and the first appearance of his famed intelligence officer, George Smiley.
