    John Kendrick Bangs. The Pursuit of the House-Boat. Being Some Further Account of the Divers Doings of the Associated Shades, under the Leadership of Sherlock Holmes, Esq. New York: Harper & Brothers Publishers, 1897. First edition, first state with "New York" imprint and seven titles listed on final page of publisher's ads. Inscribed, "If there is any good in this / book it will take Sherlock / Holmes to find it. I haven't / the time to look for it my- / self. / John Kendrick Bangs. / For Robert Newell Reid / Nov : 23 : 1917." Twelvemo. viii, [2], 204, [4, ads] pages. Frontispiece and twenty-three additional inserted plates on coated paper. Publisher's brown-yellow V cloth; front lettered in black with colored ornament; spine lettered in gilt with ornament stamped in black. Original tan dust jacket lettered in black. All edges trimmed. Housed in tan cloth chemise in custom slipcase, one-quarter book-backed tan morocco over tan cloth, spine stamped in gilt with five raised bands. Minor shelf wear at extremities of binding; spine slightly darkened. Dust jacket fairly toned with several chips at joint and flap folds, though very little chipping overall; tape repairs at verso of spine panel, now darkened and beginning to show through at recto. Top edge a touch dust-soiled. Some shelf wear and dust-soiling to slipcase. A near fine book in a rare, very good dust jacket. With red leather book label of Florence and Edward Kaye inside chemise. The second book in Bangs's "Associated Shades" series, featuring a number of illustrious (fictional and historical) deceased residing in a houseboat on the River Styx. This volume features Sherlock Holmes, who at the time had been declared dead by A. Conan Doyle, though he would later return to the land of the living for further adventures. BAL 731.

Inscribed, "To my dear, but somewhat / youthful, son John, / this volume of [--] / forms of plain-cut / paper, from his loving / Pop. / June 6 : 1899." Twelvemo. [viii], [2], 247, [2, ads] pages. Frontispiece; thirty-four full-page illustrations, included in pagination. Publisher's full brown V cloth, front and spine lettered in gilt with ornament of a lobster stamped on front in red and black. Edges rough-trimmed. Barely perceptible shelf wear at extremities of binding; mild dust-soiling to backstrip and top edge of boards and text block. Normal age toning to remaining edges and interior of text block; endpapers slightly foxed. About near fine. BAL 741.

Inscribed, "These results of Yonkers / air are respectfully dedi- / cated to the unfortunate purchaser by / John Kendrick Bangs." Twelvemo. [8], 170, [6] pages. Frontispiece and nine additional inserted plates on coated paper by Peter Newell. Publisher's original tan cloth; front and spine lettered in gilt; front with multicolored typewriter ornament. Edges untrimmed; top edge trimmed and stained red. Spine panel and edges of binding darkened; corners slightly bumped; a bit of soiling and splashing, particularly at rear board. Top edge of text block dust-soiled; normal age toning to remaining edges.  About near fine. From the Otto Penzler Collection of Mystery Fiction.
