    More Information: James M. Cain. Mildred Pierce. New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 1941. Advance copy of first edition. Octavo. [8], 388, [2] pages. Original illustrated wrappers, serving as mockup for first edition dust jacket. All edges trimmed. Housed in black cloth chemise in custom black cloth slipcase; green morocco spine labels lettered in gilt; with room and chemise for first trade edition. Mild toning to wrappers with light wear at edges, joints and flap folds; creasing to backstrip; front wrapper starting to split at bottom, but still sound. Small gouge at bottom inner margin of front wrapper, visible through first gathering of leaves. Top corner of text block slightly bumped. Top edge of text block darkened; regular age toning to other edges and interior. Very good. Source material for the 1945 film noir of the same name, which earned Joan Crawford her first and only Academy Award; later adapted into the 2011 miniseries starring Kate Winslet. From the Otto Penzler Collection of Mystery Fiction.
