An Archive of Material of an Article about
James M. Cain, with Some Items
    Signed by Cain

James M. Cain (American Author, 1892-1977). Archive of correspondence between James M. Cain and Robert Kendall, concerning an interview and article for an unspecified magazine. [Hyattsville, MD and Woodland Hills, CA, 1974-1977]. Archive includes a Typed Letter Signed by James M. Cain to Kendall on Cain's personal stationery (April 14, 1974) Approximately 11 x 8.5 inches. Letter concerns Kendall's questionnaire (see below) and asks Kendall to speak to his (Cain's) stepdaughter, and ask her to send Cain her new address. [And:] Signed Photograph of Cain, inscribed: "To Robert Kendall/with best regards./James M. Cain". Approximately 7 x 5 inches. Photograph is stamped "Proof Only," and has the printed caption, "Property of the Studio of Slinkman Photographers". Curiously, the photograph depicts Cain with his eyes closed, as if asleep. [And:] One quarto sheet of typed answers by Cain on a questionnaire originally typed by Kendall (for example, question 5 is: "What stars who played in your pictures MOST impressed you and Why?" Cain's typed response is immediately below: "Barbara Stanwick [sic] - - she made it seem real." Approximately 11 x 8.5 inches. [And:] Two manuscript typed pages of the article by Kendall, with his autograph notes and corrections. Approximately 11 x 8.5 inches. Apparently written after Cain's death. [And:] Original Mailing Envelope. April 15, 1974. Although the address label is typed, Cain was obliged to write the zip code by hand. Envelope has Kendall's holograph notes on recto and verso. Approximately 6.5 x 9.5 inches. All items, except for the envelope, are written on rectos only. Some toning, soiling, creasing. Generally very good. An interesting, if brief, look into Cain's process.

The pre and post sales experience was wonderful and flawless. Heritage has the best in-house operation I have ever seen and their people are not only professional but fun to work with, especially Steve C.

As for Heritage's online system… Yes the interface is more complex than what we are used to with SAN but what is behind that interface is amazing for sellers and buyers alike. It is real time and for a real serious auction buyer there is nothing better in the auction industry, bar none.
