Description

Ian Fleming. The Man with the Golden Gun. London: Jonathan Cape, 1965. First edition. Octavo (7.25 x 4.875 inches; 185 x 125 mm.). 221, [3, blank]. Publisher's black cloth, first state with large gun design stamped in gilt toward the lower-center of the front board, spine lettered in gilt with publisher's device in gilt at foot; all edges trimmed; endpapers printed with green and white fiber pattern. In original dust jacket, designed by Richard Chopping. Binding restored at spine ends and corners. Corners bumped; front board lightly rubbed; spine creased; touches of toning to endpapers. Dust jacket inexpertly reinforced at edges of spine panel and corners of folds; additional restoration at front panel. Front panel stained, possibly with adhesive residue; price clipped; rear panel foxed. A nice sophisticated copy, presents as very good. The thirteenth James Bond book. One of 940 copies with the gilt-stamped gun design, produced before it became evident that the cost was prohibitively expensive to complete the print run. According to Gilbert, this is effectively a trial binding that was rejected in favor of less expensive alternative. Most copies shipped to Commonwealth countries. Gilbert A13a (1.1).
