Publisher's black cloth, spine lettered in gilt with publisher's device in gilt at foot, front board stamped in blind with drawing of a skull, a single fifty-dollar gold piece stamped in gilt in each eye socket, first state with small detail stamped in upper-left portion of skull; all edges trimmed; plain white endpapers. In original first-issue dust jacket designed by Richard Chopping, with nineteen-line blurb on the front flap. Very slight sloping of the spine; crown and upper corners very gently bumped. Dust jacket spine panel very faintly darkened; trace light edgewear; small dark blemish to the front panel near joint fold; light marginal soiling to the rear panel. Near fine.
