Ian Fleming. Casino Royale. London: Jonathan Cape, [1953]. First edition, second impression, with "Second Impression 1953" printed to the copyright page and first edition printing points as called for. Octavo. 218 pages. Publisher's black Fabroleen cloth stamped in matte orange-red; original illustrated second impression jacket by Ken Lewis with the Sunday Times quote printed to the front flap and the addition of the words "The Author," aligned right between the illustration and the following three lines of text on the back panel. Foot of spine just pushed. Plain white endpapers. Internally clean and tight, top and and fore-edge trimmed, tail edge rough-trimmed; a few small speckles of soiling to margins, text block edges lightly toned with minor wear and one small dampstain to top edge. Dust jacket unclipped (10s 6d); minor edgewear, head and foot of spine and corners lightly creased with a few very small chips, lightly toned, two dampstains to back panel just barely touching text. Near fine book with very good or better dust jacket.

A bright, beautiful early copy of the story that began the Bond legacy, described by Fleming himself to his close friend, Robert Harling, as the "spy novel to end all spy novels."

    Gilbert A1a (2.1), dust jacket A.
