Description

Ian Fleming. Casino Royale. London: Jonathan Cape, [1953]. First edition, dust jacket artist Kenneth Lewis's copy with his ownership signature on the front free endpaper. Octavo (162 x 125 mm). 218, [2, blank] pages. Publisher's black cloth, spine lettered in orangish-red, central heart-shaped device stamped in orangish-red on front board; top and fore edges trimmed, bottom edge untrimmed; plain white endpapers. In restored original first-issue dust jacket, lacking the overprinted Sunday Times review on the front flap; variant that's just slightly taller than the book. Very shallow slope to the spine; front boards just slightly splayed. Top edge of text block just slightly soiled. Dust jacket restored at spine ends and edges of the folds; large chip at crown expertly replaced with 'IAN' and part of the 'G' of 'FLEMING' supplied in manuscript ink; a couple creases on front panel near upper edge of front joint fold softened and barely perceptible; white background of rear panel lightly soiled. Near fine in a handsomely restored jacket. Housed in a custom clamshell case. The edges of the jacket are more susceptible to wear than normal due to the height of the jacket, acknowledged by Lee Biondi and James Pickard in a 2008 Firsts Magazine article ("In first editions of Casino Royale...two small variants have come to light...Several copies have been seen where the dust jacket is slightly taller than the book. This can lead to slightly creasing and wear at the head of the spine and along the top edge."). Gilbert A1a (1.1). The first James bond novel. From the KoKo Collection.
