    Description

Geoffrey Homes. Forty Whacks. New York: 1941. First edition, together with an inscribed copy.

    More Information:

Geoffrey Homes. Forty Whacks. New York: William Morrow and Company, 1941. First edition. Octavo (7.5 x 5.125 inches; 190 x 130 mm.). [viii], 246, [2, blank] pages. Publisher's green cloth, spine lettered in black and stamped in red; top edge of the text block stained red, others untrimmed; plain endpapers; in the original dust jacket, priced $2.00. Spine ends slightly faded, just where exposed from tears in the jacket; bottom corners tapped. Top edge of the text block with two small, faint blemishes; endpapers browned and discolored from binder's glue; text block margins tanned but the pages are still quite supple. Dust jacket with a sizeable (about one inch wide and three quarters of one inch deep) chip top to the top edge, centered at the rear panel fold, losing the F in Forty and barely shaving the adjacent letters (including the W and H in Whacks just beneath and the tip of the N in Fan on the rear panel); a few other smaller chips to the top edge of the rear panel, not affecting any printing; other lesser edgewear; folds a little rubbed; spine panel very faintly dulled with a couple tiny splashes. A near fine copy in an about very good jacket.

[Together with:] Anthony copy, first edition, inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper: "To Charlie / affectionately / Daniel Geoffrey Homes / Mainwaring / one of his boys." Publisher's cloth, as above, lacking the dust jacket. Spine gently leaning; backstrip faintly dulled; crown slightly crimped; corners barely tapped; extremities very lightly rubbed. Endpapers tanned. Very good. Basis for the 1944 film Crime by Night, starring Jane Wyman. From the Otto Penzler Collection of Mystery Fiction.
