    Fergus Hume. The Piccadilly Puzzle. A Mysterious Story. London: F. V. White & Co., 1889. First edition. Inscribed at head of first page of text, "To / Miss C Crommelin [?] / with the kindest regards / of The Author / Fergus Hume / 28. 6. 89." Octavo. [8], 118, [2] pages. Publisher's dark blue cloth, spine lettered in gilt, front and rear stamped in red; all text block edges trimmed. Spine ends pushed and a bit worn; wear along joints; cloth generally dulled and soiled, with some light rubbing visible at boards, particularly where cloth has slightly rippled; trace of wear along bottom edges; corners tapped. Text block softly dulled with age; hinges just starting to split; spine split at a few places throughout, with some gatherings sprung, though all still sound; foxing to endpapers; mild marginal spot- and thumbsoiling scattered occasionally throughout interior; evidence of dog-earing. Very good.

[6], 118, [2] pages (note: first leaf of ads removed at front, with partial stub visible). Publisher's dark blue cloth, spine lettered in gilt, front and rear stamped in red; all text block edges trimmed. Spine ends very slightly pushed and worn; some rubbing resulting in minimal loss to red ruling at head and foot; light wear along joints; boards lightly rubbed with a few spots of soiling at rear; upper corners tapped, with tiny split to cloth at upper corner of rear board. Text block very softly dulled; a couple of gatherings sprung; bookseller's stamp at front pastedown; mild discoloration to free endpapers. Near fine.
