Publisher's light gray boards, spine lettered in dark green, front board lettered and stamped in dark green, in original dust jacket. Spine ends and corners lightly worn. Nearly fine in a very good dust jacket with a short closed tear to the upper edge of the front panel with corresponding light creasing, light otherwise, occasional light rubbing. One of two novels for which Hunter, best remembered as Ed McBain, used the Hunt Collins pseudonym. The author's first hardcover mystery.

Publisher's binding of gray cloth to upper-third over red paper-covered boards, spine lettered and ruled in black, front board ruled in black with author's facsimile signature stamped in black; top edge stained black; in original dust jacket. Spine just barely askew toward bottom edge; base of spine and bottom corners lightly worn; bottom corners softly bumped. Small faint stain to bottom of text block. Dust jacket edges very lightly worn; short tear at upper edge of front flap very minor paper loss; rear panel rubbed. Near fine overall. Basis for the 1955 film starring Glenn Ford.
