According to Hawks, in Peter Bogdanovich's Who the Devil Made It (New York: 1997, accessed online), the project came about on a fishing trip with Hemingway, when Hawks said he could make a film out of Hemingway's "worst book." William Faulkner eventually contributed to the screenplay. Hanneman A14a. From the Otto Penzler Collection of Mystery Fiction.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
