Octavo. 319, [1] pages. Publisher's full red cloth, lettering to spine. All edges trimmed. Slightly skewed; moderate wear to edges and joints of binding; corners gently bumped; mild fading to backstrip cloth and lettering; spine ends softened; boards rubbed with some soiling, a few damp stains; front with remains of what appear to be paper label toward bottom. Top edge of text block slightly darkened with a bit of speckling; regular age toning and light rubbing to remaining edges; black inked line to bottom edge near spine. Penciling, now erased, to verso of front free endpaper; slight split between front endpaper and half-title, though spine still sound; inked date at lower corners of rear endpapers, with remains of removed labels at inner margins; occasional marginal spot-staining scattered throughout text block. Lacking jacket. About very good. Ambler's best-known work and a forerunner of the thriller genre. Basis for the 1944 film noir of the same name. A Haycraft Queen Cornerstone. From the Otto Penzler Collection of Mystery Fiction.
