Edgar A[llan] Poe. "The Murders in the Rue Morgue," in Graham's Lady's and Gentleman's Magazine. Volume XVIII-XIX. Philadelphia: George R. Graham, 1841. First collected edition, and first appearance of Poe's story. Two volumes in one. Octavo. iv, 296; iv, 308. Several engraved plates, some hand-colored. Contemporary half black morocco over marbled paper-covered boards, spine lettered in gilt with five raised bands tooled in blind; all text block edges trimmed; brown endpapers. Wear to spine ends, joints and board edges; series of shallow nicks and abrasions along spine; nicking along edges of paper covering boards; boards rubbed, with a few scratches. Hinges cracked, but still sound; bookplate and book label at front pastedown, with additional bookplate laid in between front endpapers; penciled signature and address to recto of front flyleaf. Text block edges slightly darkened and soiled along edges; occasional marginal soiling scattered throughout interior, with some foxing and a bit of faint offsetting opposite plates. Very good. Housed in custom slipcase. First appearance of the first modern detective story.
