First edition, presentation copy, inscribed by the author in the year of publicationon on the front free endpaper: To / Helen and Louis / this product of / Rooms 43 and 41, / Williams Inn / Earl Derr Biggers / Williamstown / August 14, 1925." Octavo. [iv], 316 pages. Publisher's orange cloth, front board and spine lettered in green. Covers lightly soiled with larger blemish on the front board; joints and edges worn; cloth lightly discolored at front joint; spine gently leaning; backstrip faintly dulled; cloth starting to fray at spine ends; corners worn with board just barely exposed; slightly shaken. Newspaper clipping affixed to rear pastedown with offsetting opposite; last leaf of text glued to endpaper at gutter (unclear if done in the binding process or to strengthen hinge) with lower portion separating and light bruising as a result; occasional minor overopening. About very good. The first Charlie Chan mystery. Adapated in the silent era as a Pathé serial, and again with Warner Oland in his career-defining role as Charlie Chan's Greatest Case in 1933.
