First edition, review copy with the publisher's slip laid in; association copy, inscribed by the author for Otto Penzler on the half-title page: "One of my most / favorites of mine - it being / my first. I lived some months / in the apartment where dire things - inventive began. / with affection / Dorothy / B Hughes." Octavo (7.25 x 5 inches; 185 x 127 mm.). 240 pages. Publisher's black cloth, spine lettered and ruled in grayish-blue; front board stamped in the same; top edge of the text block stained gray; play endpapers; in the original dust jacket, priced $2.00. Spine ends and corners with just a touch of wear. Top stain very faintly faded toward the bound edge; endpapers faintly tanned. Dust jacket lightly rubbed with a hint of wear along the folds; a few small nicks to the spine ends; trace of negligible soiling. Nearly fine, an exceptional copy. From the Otto Penzler Collection of Mystery Fiction.

    More Information: The author's debut novel. Otto Penzler published new editions of several of Hughes's titles, including a reissue of The So Blue Marble, for which he wrote the introduction.
