    More Information:

Dorothy B. Hughes. The Blackbirder. New York: Duell, Sloan and Pearce, [1943]. First edition. Octavo (7.375 x 5.125 inches; 188 x 130 mm.). [vi], 250 pages. Publisher's black textured paper-covered boards, spine lettered and stamped in orange; top and bottom edges of the text block trimmed, fore-edge untrimmed; plain endpapers; in the original dust jacket, priced $2.00. Spine very gently leaning; boards very slightly bowed; light rubbing to the front board along the joint and fore-edge; touch of wear to the spine ends and corners. Endpapers very lightly tanned. Dust jacket spine panel with a hint of soiling, orange ink faded; edges very lightly worn with a couple tiny nicks; soft wrinkle to the rear panel near the panel fold. Very good.

[Together with:] Another copy, first edition, advance issue; association copy, inscribed by the author for Otto Penzler on the frony free endpaper: "Come west some time / [and] I'll show you where some / of these books were spawned -- / Soon! / Dorothy / B Hughes," additionally initialed on the title-page. Publisher's perfect binding in the original wrappers (an example of the dust jacket trimmed slightly shorter). Spine somewhat leaning, rolled and creased; light rippling to the upper edge of the rear panel; spine faded in the orange ink; edges and joints lightly worn; light overall rubbing.

[And:] Another copy. New York: Duell, Sloan and Pearce, [1943 or shortly after]. Early edition, presumed second, with the War Edition notice intact on the copyright page, first edition slug removed and the type reset; association copy, inscribed by the author for Otto Penzler: "Another book part of / which I lived - the Juarez part - / what interested me the most was that one of / my best friends, unplanned, became / the villain - it surprised him also! / Dorothy / B Hughes." Octavo (7.25 x 5.125 inches; 185 x 130 mm.). [2, blank], [vi], 211, [5, blank] pages. Publisher's orange cloth, spine lettered in black; all edges of the text block trimmed; plain endpapers; in the original dust jacket, priced $2.00, seemingly identical to that of the first edition, just resized by trimming off the bottom edge. Spine somewhat leaning; spine ends dulled and pushed with a touch of wear; only a hint of wear at the corners; boards lightly rubbed. Page edges very lightly soiled; endpapers lightly discolored in the gutters from the binder's glue; previous owner signature on the front pastedown. Dust jacket spine panel orange ink faded; light creasing to the folds; scanty light edgewear. Near fine. From the Otto Penzler Collection of Mystery Fiction.
