Dashiell Hammett with Alex Raymond (illustrator). Secret Agent X-9. Book One[-Two]. Philadelphia: David McKay, [1934]. First editions. Two volumes; square octavos (7.4375 x 7.875 inches; 189 x 200 mm.). 80; 120 pages. Publisher's side-stapled binding with the original thin, printed paper-covered boards (same illustration on front and back), spines covered in unprinted binding tape (red on Book One, blue on Book Two); all edges of the text block trimmed. Spines very gently leaning; board edges very lightly worn; light creasing near the joints (as expected); light rubbing or offsetting the inner boards. Book One corners of the front board softly creased; page edges very lightly foxed with a touch of soiling, some sporadic marginal spot-soiling (including a larger area around the bottom corner on pages 45-47), previous owner signature on the title-page. Book Two upper corner bumped with two shallow ripples through the text block. Near fine overall; nice copies of a fragile publication. Originally published from January 29 to September 12, 1934, in syndicated newspaper comic strips. Layman A7.1-A8.1 (also D15-D211, original strips). From the Otto Penzler Collection of Mystery Fiction.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
