    Dashiell Hammett. Typed Letter, Initialed, to Prudence Whitfield. [Adak Island] The Aleutians [Alaska]: July 17 1944. Presumed ribbon copy or retained draft, on thin paper without mailing folds, address "Dear Pru," initialed in the bottom margin by the author, "S D H," in pencil. Single sheet, recto only, 8 x 11.125 inches. Single horizontal fold (off-center). Large selections of texts noted in margins with vertical lines and unidentified characters in blue ink; 21 written in the upper-left corner. Page edges tanned and worn with several small chips and closed tears; single piece of cloth tape to the top edge. Very good. From the Otto Penzler Collection of Mystery Fiction.

    More Information: Hammett was stationed at Adak Island during World War II after Japanese forces attacked a base on Unalaska Island. There he wrote The Battle of the Aleutians (Adak, Alaska : Intelligence Section, Field Force Headquarters, 1943) and contributed to The Adakian, an official newspaper (Molly Scwartzburg, "Corporal Dashiell Hammett's 'The Battle of the Aleutians: A Graphic History, 1942-1943,'" Ransom Center Magazine, accessed online).
