Dashiell Hammett. The Maltese Falcon. New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 1930. First edition. Octavo (7.375 x 5.125 inches; 189 x 130 mm.). [4, blank], [2, half-title ("By Dashiell Hammett" on verso)], [2, title (copyright on verso)], [2, dedication (verso blank)], [2, contents], 267, [1, blurb and colophon], [4, blank] pages. Original light gray smooth V cloth. Front cover stamped with dark grayish blue falcon within a black single-rule border; rear cover stamped with black rectangular Borzoi Books device in lower right corner; spine with five blue and black decorated panels, the author's name and title in gray against a black panel and the publisher's name and place in blue against light gray panel. Top and bottom edges trimmed, fore-edge untrimmed/uncut. Top edge stained blue (faded). In the original first state of the dust jacket with requisite $2.00 pricing for the two previously published Hammett novels (Red Harvest and The Dain Curse) on the rear panel. Jacket price-clipped (as usual). Slight fading or foxing near the top and bottom edges; spine ends lightly bumped; tiny ding to top edge of rear cover. Over-opened between the two preliminary blank leaves; blue top stain visible at top edge of several leaves; a few faint marginal stains or smudges; the center two leaves of several gatherings with slight diagonal crease mostly in the gutter margin from the top edge, occasional affecting a few letters; a few tiny edge dings or tears and a few corner tips worn away. Printing error (?) on pages 117/118, giving the appearance of a few words set or reset. Dust jacket professionally restored and backed with rice paper, repairing folds, small pieces at top and bottom of rear panel, spine and front panel renewed; some expert recoloring. A near fine copy in a very presentable restored dust jacket. Housed in a quarter navy blue morocco clamshell case. The novel was adapted for the screen four times, the third and best-known version, filmed in 1941, is considered to be a film-noir classic, starring Humphrey Bogart and Mary Astor. Layman A3.1.a. A Haycraft-Queen Cornerstone. The Dark Page 132. From the KoKo Collection.

This was my first time dealing with an auction house, and I am 100% completely impressed with Heritage. There is not an aspect of this process that I have a critique for.
