Dashiell Hammett. The Glass Key. New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 1931. First U. S. edition, second overall, following the first English. Octavo (7.375 x 5.125 inches; 189 x 129 mm.). [8], 282 pages. Publisher's light blue cloth; front and spine stamped in dark red and dark green; dark green broken key ornament at front board; dark green publisher's stamp at rear; top edge of the text block stained purplish-red, others untrimmed; in the original pictorial dust jacket, first printing with a description of the book printed on the front flap (as opposed to a series of review blurbs). Mild toning to binding at spine and edges, with a bit of faint spotting to boards; minimal shelf wear. Normal age toning to edges and interior of text block; some leaves roughly opened at fore-edge, resulting in slight fraying. Spine over-opened but still sound between pages 56 and 57. Mild rubbing at exposed panels of jacket with a bit of edge wear, most pronounced at spine ends; soft creasing at flap folds; tiny amount of paper loss at ends of front flap fold; green key and text at spine slightly faded. Very good. Housed in custom dark blue cloth clamshell with black leather spine labels, lettered in gilt. Basis for two film adaptations in 1935 and 1942, as well as a 1939 radio play starring Orson Welles. A Haycraft Queen Cornerstone. Layman A 4.2.a; The Dark Page 134. From the Otto Penzler Collection of Mystery Fiction.
