Publisher's blue cloth, spine lettered and ruled in red, white key ornament on front and spine, red publisher's stamp on the rear board; top edge of the text block stained blue, others trimmed. Mild shelf wear, most pronounced at corners and spine ends; slight bump at lower corner of front board. A touch of wear to topstain near spine; regular age toning to remaining edges and interior of text block; some scattered, faint spots of foxing at bottom and fore-edge. Near fine. Basis for two film adaptations in 1935 and 1942, as well as a 1939 radio play starring Orson Welles. A Haycraft Queen Cornerstone. Layman A 4.1; The Dark Page 134.
